More in-depth and straight-forward than its contemporary analogues, this is an excellent grammar reference. I would recommend it to anyone; it's great as a textbook and as a simple reference. I'm using it to pass vocational English tests and quickly improve my editing skills. The lack of solutions to the exercises is the only aspect of this book with which I'm dissatisfied. The exercises are useful anyhow. I haven't used the sections on composition or entrance exams, so I cannot comment on them.It is an old book, so it isn't printed with a lot of color or key terms set apart in fancy boxes. The first five parts at least seem best studied in sequence, as they build up from the parts of speech to writing documents.This book covers grammar beyond the basic level, but when I needed even more in-depth information (on fine points of the use of brackets and hyphens), I was able to find it in the Chicago Manual of Style.
I was looking for a grammar book for my son in middle school. There are so many grammar workbooks out there, & I have certainly been an enthusiastic consumer of them. Some of them have been helpful, others have languished on my bookshelf with only a few pages done. This book I bought because it looked a little similar to what I used in junior high, & after I received it, I realized I did indeed use one of the Warriner editions decades ago. The textbook is really old-school, which was what I wanted. It really breaks down everything & teaches the basics, plus usage and writing.Somehow it has become unfashionable to teach grammar at school these days, but the kids are expected to be able to write in high school (without being properly taught!). I used this book and became able to write, & I'm hoping it will be the case with my son. The only drawback is that this is not in a workbook style (more like a textbook) so I really have to do it with him, rather than have him work independently. But if you don't mind spending the time, this book is great for those searching for an old-school grammar curriculum.

I have been looking for a grammar book to fill in the gaps of my rather thin grammar abilities. Yes I know a verb from a noun and I can write reasonably well however, complicated sentences give me a headache, figuratively and literally. One teacher said I seemed to be in a coma about commas. So, when someone in a review mentioned a book recommended by Stephen King who keeps it at hand I thought well, there's the ticket. I got today and I wish they had used this when I was in high school and college, not to mention junior high school grammar where it all went downhill because I was rarely in class due to illness. I also would have loved to have had this book for grad school.I was looking at the Cambridge grammar series but I have to say this book is much more useful. The title of this book is "English Composition and Grammar" with Complete Course listed further down but, it covers much more. There are chapters on writing letters, poetry, fiction, essays, plays and more. Then there is the middle part of the book where the grammar lessons begin in earnest. My only caveat is that some sections while offering review exercises don't seem to have answers, but that's easily remedied with access to free online websites and or grammar workbooks.Like Stephen King I will be keeping this book close at hand. This is a wonderful guide to English grammar! It is the only textbook I kept from my high school days from years ago. I bought this copy to share with a friend who grew up on another country and wants to improve her mastery of the English language. The condition of this recently purchased book was excellent! (Better than the one I kept from my school days!)
had the extra cash to purchase. have been interested for some time. I have a note dating back some years of my desire to locate and purchase (when I finally had the cash (knowing it may be a high price to pay for the set of them (there is a set of 7 books, plus a set of 6 or 7 vocabulary books linked to them (which I purchased like I had planned to some time ago.))))
Having been out of school many years found myself needing a refresher for writing. Warriner's exactly met expectations. Easy to use and generally quick to the point. Has become a reference kept handy. At times read because it's interesting as well as usefull.
I'm a Prof. in Developmental English. This book covers all of the important details of writing. Great exercises, great examples to refer to. One of my favorite things about this book - pictures! Pictures intentionally chosen to have more than one meaning - which is exactly what many teachers look for in basic writing classes.My one wish would be that the language was a little bit simpler for those who struggle.
